Quick answers about the extension, the website and your phone
Chrome extension
I installed it. Where's the icon?
Chrome tucks new extensions into the puzzle-piece menu at the right end of the toolbar. Click the puzzle piece, then the pin next to Pass Builder. The orange key now stays in your toolbar, and the generator drops down right below it.
Is there a keyboard shortcut?
Yes: Alt Shift P on Windows and ChromeOS, Option Shift P on a Mac. Press Esc to close the dropdown.
To change it, open the extension's Settings (the gear in the dropdown) and click Change shortcut, or go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts. If the shortcut does nothing, another app or extension is probably using the same keys; pick a different combination there.
How do I reset my settings?
The extension remembers your last length and character types. To go back to 16 characters with every type turned on, open Settings and click Reset to defaults.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, plus browsers built on the same engine, such as Brave and Microsoft Edge. In Edge, turn on Allow extensions from other stores when it asks. Firefox and Safari can't install Chrome extensions, but the website works in every browser.
How do I remove it?
Right-click the key icon and choose Remove from Chrome. Its saved settings are deleted with it.
Passwords
Are my passwords saved or sent anywhere?
No. Passwords are created on your device and exist only on screen until you close the generator or make a new one. Nothing is logged or sent to us or anyone else. The privacy policy has the details.
How random are they?
Every character comes from your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator (the Web Crypto API), which is designed for security uses like this. Pass Builder also uses an unbiased selection method, so no character is ever more likely than another.
What does the strength meter measure?
It's a quick guide, not a full security audit. It looks at two things: length (12 characters or more is better, 16 or more better still) and variety (at least three character types). Meet all three and it reads Strong. For most accounts, 16 or more characters with every type turned on is a solid choice.
Why is there always at least one of each type I pick?
Many sites reject passwords that don't include a mix, such as at least one number and one symbol. Pass Builder makes sure every type you turn on appears at least once, then shuffles the result so those characters can land anywhere.
A site won't accept the symbols. What should I do?
Some sites only allow certain symbols. Turn off Symbols and add a few characters of length to make up for it; a longer password of letters and numbers is still very strong.
Website & phone
Can I put it on my phone's Home Screen?
Yes. It then opens like an app, without the browser's address bar.
iPhone or iPad:
- Open passbuilder.pro in Safari.
- Tap the Share button.
- Choose Add to Home Screen, then tap Add.
Android: open passbuilder.pro in Chrome and tap Install on the page. If that doesn't appear, open Chrome's menu (⋮) and choose Install app or Add to Home screen.
Does it work offline?
The Chrome extension works with no connection at all. The website and the Home Screen shortcut need a connection to load, but once the page is open, generating passwords happens entirely on your device.
Does the website remember my settings?
No. The website stores nothing, so it always starts at 16 characters with every type turned on. The Chrome extension is the version that remembers your choices.
